Yesterday, on 15 July 2026, Ian Curtis would have turned 70.

With “Closer”, the band Joy Division made music history.
Just a year earlier, they had set a milestone with “Unknown Pleasures”, which turned the band – and with it, Ian Curtis – into a living icon. Most critics described the album as the saddest, darkest and most depressing album of all time. Could anything follow that? Yes, as we all know.

Ian Curtis, himself heavily influenced by David Bowie, the Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk(!), the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Jim Morrison and the writers Franz Kafka, Hermann Hesse and Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, shaped everything that came after him with his music – from goth, rock, alternative, indie and post-punk right through to rap.

The combination of rock and the avant-garde of the late 60s and early 70s, punk, electronic music and literary influences made Ian Curtis who he was. A sensitive young man, trapped in a cold world from which there was no escape, just like in a novel by Kafka.
.

How would Ian Curtis have reacted to the immense success of *Closer* had he lived to see its release? Perhaps he would have taken his own life afterwards, as he had always wanted to be famous and die. But perhaps the album became so successful precisely because of Ian Curtis’s suicide? We’ll never really know.
.

Whether it was a success or not, *Closer* is one of the most important albums for the music scene as a whole and for me personally – even sadder, darker and more depressing than *Unknown Pleasures*. It has also played a huge part in shaping who I am and who I want to be.

[Moondawn] [Klaus Schulze] [1976] [LP]

Unbelievable but true: it is exactly 50 years ago today, 16 April, that “Moondawn” was first released!

As is well known, Klaus Schulze and Harald Großkopf had previously played together in Ashra Tempel. The 1976 album *Moondawn* could therefore almost be an Ashra Tempel album – albeit with the roles reversed. Klaus Schulze takes on the synthesizers and sequencers, Harald Großkopf the drums. As both musicians are both outstanding drummers and masters of electronics, they get on exceptionally well. That is why the collaboration on this album is so incredibly brilliant. There are two tracks here that seem very different, yet possess the same atmospheric density.

‘Moondawn’ is one of the finest works the ‘Berlin School’ has to offer. Anyone who hasn’t heard ‘Moondawn’ before, or has ignored it for some inexplicable reason, is missing out on one of Klaus Schulze’s finest works (in brilliant collaboration with Harald Großkopf). Sacred, pastoral, ethereal soundscapes (as we’ve come to expect from Klaus Schulze) intertwine with real drums to create an almost hypnotic trance journey that won’t let you go. The drums, played so damn well by a human being (Harald Großkopf), form such a perfect synthesis with Klaus Schulze’s inimitably masterful electronics that I willingly let myself become addicted to this damn (but oh so wonderful) drug time and time again!

Fifty years ago, David Bowie, who sadly passed away far too early, released his classic album Station to Station.

There is not much to say about "Station to Station" by David Bowie except that it is a perfectly produced pop album with nothing to complain about.

David Bowie shines in the role of his new alter ego "The White Duke". Six great songs peppered with both funk and soul elements, but which also already let the sound of the coming brilliant "Berlin years" shine through. David Bowie uses Moog and Mellotron on "Station to Station".
.
By the way, the song "Wild is the Wind" is a cover version of a song from 1957.

"Station to Station" is a highlight of David Bowie's musical output.

9 November 1950, Johannes Schmoelling is born.

Thirty years later, together with Edgar Froese and Christoph Franke, he created “Tangram”, in my humble opinion the best album by Tangerine Dream in the 1980s.
Happy birthday, Johannes Schmoelling. Incidentally, the Album Tangram will be celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2025.
.
After many unsuccessful experiments at the end of the 70s, this album seems like a reincarnation of the band. The main focus of Tangerine Dream in the 80's was on film music that was probably used to make a lot of money. Artistically this time was not Tangerine Dream's time. But with "Tangram" a great work came out.
.

The sound is no longer the same as in the 70s, new synthesizer technologies are in play and instead of Peter Baumann Johannes Schmoelling has stepped in. All in all, Tangerine Dream on this album sound a bit cooler, no not cooler, maybe a bit more modern, fresh, optimistic. The new techniques also made it possible to create completely new soundscapes never heard before on Tangerine Dream.

Johannes Schmoelling contributed a lot to the "new" sound. As I said this album is the best 80's Tangerine Dream album for me. There are two very nice tracks on it that will not disappoint even the fan of 70s synths. Pulsating rhythms, floating beautiful melodies and soulful clouds of sound are actually as good as ever.
It should take a long time until Tangerine Dream sounds as good as on this album.

45 Jahre "In the flat Field”.

Not much needs to be said about Bauhaus' debut album "In the flat Field", except that it is a masterpiece of goth rock. Particularly noteworthy: "Nerves", Double Dare", "Spy in the Cab" and the incomparable "Stigmata Martyr".
The Godfathers of Goth have well deserved this title!

Are you looking for one of the most beautiful duets in the independent scene? On "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea" you will find it! With "This mess, we're in" PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke are promoted to the Olympus of the best vocal duos of all time.

Actually I'm not really qualified to describe PJ Harvey's albums, because I'm in love with this fascinating person, so I'm extremely biased and like everything PJ Harvey releases!
.
But I think, regardless of my bias, here is another pearl of enchanting independent music. Again PJ Harvey shines with her honest, unvarnished lyrics and her excellent voice in every pitch. Add to this these beautiful compositions with these intelligent arrangements, oh, it is simply a joy to listen to this album.

By the way: In 2001 PJ Harvey received the Mercury Prize for this album. PJ Harvey was the first female solo artist to receive the Mercury Prize in the history of the award. Many more high awards and prizes for this album followed later.

Fifty(!) years ago, in October 1975, Kraftwerk changed the world of pop music forever.

The change from Krautrock to Electro Pop, which already appeared on the album "Autobahn" of 1974 is finally completed in 1975 with the album "Radioaktivität".

Kraftwerk, one of the primary rocks of Krautrock, is now an electropop band.
The new member Karl Bartos plays electronic drums and also the other instruments are now purely electronic.
.

But Kraftwerk wouldn't be Kraftwerk if they didn't put the ingenious compositions
on the side of the cool electronics. Kraftwerk sounds anything but cool.
The album "Radioaktivität" is full of romanticism from the beginning to the end
and almost entirely danceable!
.
The album is brimming over with new ideas. It's about radioactivity and radio activities, a play on words which is also evident in the individual titles such as e.g. ether waves, transistor, Geiger counter or uranium. An album full of humor, musicality and a hidden critique of nuclear energy. That despite the use of purely electronic means, an emotional pop album has been released, is what makes Kraftwerk ingenious.
.
With this album, Kraftwerk have opened the door to a completely new world created by themselves at that time. This genius has inspired Africa Bambaataa, Chic, David Bowie, Giorgio Moroder, Devo, Human League, Depeche Mode, OMD, Yellow Magic Orchestra, up to Orbital, Orb or Aphex Twin.

Without "Kraftwerk" we would have to do without all these wonderful bands.

By the way: His musical companion Brian Eno (who was significantly involved in this album) turned 77 yesterday on 15 May 2025!

Describing the untouchable masterpiece "No Pussyfooting" is doomed to failure.
One could now hold huge lectures about Robert Fripp's unique Frippertronics. But no explanation is as good as the practice, meaning: you have(!) to hear it to be amazed.
.
One could also write novels about Brian Eno's own way of sound manipulation. Understanding the music won't be any better.
.
Open your ears and you will see better. "No Pussyfooting" is an experience of a special kind and the beginning of many great works of similar character.
.
It is like a divine providence that Fripp and Eno found each other for this experiment.
.
Or was it not a happenstance but a meeting of the gods?
.
Anyway, not explain further but listen and understand…

Today on 6 March 2025, David Gilmour, who is without doubt one of the best guitarists in the world, turns 79.

"A saucerful of secrets" is in my humble opinion one of the most underrated albums by Pink Floyd. Too much it stood and stands in the shadow of the untouchable great masterpiece "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band".
.

But such unique pieces as “Let there be more Light”, “Set the controls for the Heart of the Sun” and the title song itself are reason enough to discover and love the record!
.
For the first time with David Gilmour on guitar as a replacement for his friend Syd Barrett, who unfortunately became more and more unreliable. From now on David Gilmour is a permanent member of the band.
As bitter as it sounds, the inevitable expulsion of Syd Barrett paved the way from a psychedelic pop rock band to the most influential progressive, space, psychedelic rock band of all time.
.
Not to be forgotten, "Remember a day", a beautiful psychedelic pop song, as well as the nice kitschy "sew saw". The only song that I don't like is "Jugband Blues", a song whose potential has not been exhausted.
.
Last but not least "Corporal Clegg" is a pretty bizarre song that is still hated by many people today. It is a wonderfully bitter, satirical reckoning with the damn war that took Roger Waters' father. Nick Mason is the lead singer on this song for the first and last time.

In short, a great album that unfortunately never achieved the fame it deserves!

Almost three years ago, something unthinkable happened: the god of electronic music Klaus Schulze passed away. An incredible 50 years ago in 1975, the maestro created the masterpiece “Picture Music”. It sounds so modern that it could just as well have been written in 2025.

Klaus Schulze's album "Picture Music" differs from its predecessors in that there is actually something like a certain lightness to be heard. While the great predecessors were wonderfully melancholic and gloomy, on "Picture Music" Klaus Schulze "paints" two very different landscapes waiting to be explored.
.

Besides synthesizer and organ, Klaus Schulze rarely plays a real drum set. Here he shows that he is an excellent drummer by nature! This becomes very clear on the second track "Mental Door". The master of synthesis plays here on drums full of feeling and dynamics like no other! With all my love for drums I still like the electronic sounds of the master better. Which is why "Totem" is my clear favourite on this album.

Despite the certain ‘lightness’, this album, like all of Klaus Schulze's works, is full of depth and warmth and full of surprises. It is worth listening carefully and following the slowly changing images.
.

For me "Picture Music" is one of the best works of Klaus Schulze.
Some evil critics often speak of memory pregnant sequencer bubbles. But that's what I especially like about Klaus Schulze's 70s phase. Infinitely long sequencer surfaces, a never-ending sound carpet with hardly noticeable but nevertheless constantly existing small changes of sound colour, oh simply divine.

This note on the approaching end of the year: 50 years of “Autobahn” by “Kraftwerk”.

"Autobahn" by Kraftwerk is probably the best known and most successful track of the electronic musicians from Düsseldorf. There are different LP pressings. In contrast to the special edition of Kraftwerk "double album" also released in 1974 on which the "Kometenmelodie Melodie 2" is missing, both comet melodies are included here as well as the wonderfully gloomy, menacingly disturbing and a little eerie "Mitternacht" and the in contrast the extremely upbeat "Morgenspaziergang".
.
Nothing more needs to be said about the title track "Autobahn" than that it has not lost its hypnotic effect even after no less than 50(!) years.
.
Very good is that the two spacey comet melodies on the B-side run directly after each other. So you can quickly hear that changing the speed of a track gets a completely different character. Whereby with here the extremely slow variant "Kometenmelodie 1" altogether better pleases.

All these wonderful sound paintings are made with the help of
EMS Synthi AKS, Schulte Compact Phasing A, Minimoog, Vox Percussion King, Customized Farfisa Rhythm Unit 10, Mutron Biphase and Farfisa Professional Piano as well as flute, organ, guitar and piano.

Oh, what would the music landscape be without the band Kraftwerk.

This year 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Dead can Dance's first album.

On the debut album is only on some tracks the shortly following musical path of the Gothic and Dark Wave scene gods (which they never wanted to be, by the way!) to guess.
Some pieces are in the Darkwave style typical for the time. But there are also outstanding pieces like the grandiose "Frontier". Also the enchanting "Ocean", the rousing "Threshold" as well as the fascinating "Musica Eterna" as the last piece on this album. Hard to believe that the following albums became more and more fascinating each time!

This masterpiece came into the world an incredible 55 years ago.

Everything has been said about this album, which has been called one of the first (if not the first) and thus style-defining album of progressive rock!
.
I'll just say this much: daring, surreal, prophetic, an eerie masterpiece, eerily weird but also eerily beautiful as well as masterfully overwhelming!
Anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in progressive rock needs this album, definitely.

No less than 40 years ago in October 1984, one of the best music projects of all time released the album ‘It'll end in Tears’. Included on this album, alongside many wonderful and extraordinary works, is the best, breathtaking and most magical cover version of the extraordinary great piece ‘Song to the Siren’ by the equally extraordinary singer-songwriter Tim Buckley.

[Inventions for Electric Guitar] [ Manuel Göttsching/Ashra Tempel] [recorded 1974] [released 1975] [LP]

Unbelievable but true, it is now 50 years since Manuel Göttsching recorded his first real solo album "Inventions for electric Guitars" in the summer of 1974 , exclusively with guitar and effects units and multi-track recorder.

Manuel Göttsching wrote the following liner notes: “The incredible career of the electric guitar since the beginning of Rock n Roll times and my personal experiences on that instrument within the last six years gave me the possibility to lead the guitar to a new way of performance - electronic music.”

In the end it doesn't matter at all, because what comes out of the speakers is simply great. Wonderful sound paintings, exciting, hypnotic, driving, floating, rousing, flowing and simply magical!

Pat Matheny had his 70th birthday yesterday, 12 August 1954. Happy Birthday belatedly.

On the album "As falls wichita, falls so falls wichita falls" the exceptional guitarist Pat Metheny together with the jazz pianist Lyle Mays offers the most beautiful dreamy melodies which, because they are so sad and melancholic, are best suited to overcome depressive moods in times like these.

After the fascinating title track, one is briefly torn from the beautiful "melancholy" with "Ozark". But after that it continues beautifully sad and moving with the (Bill Evans dedicated) track "September Fifteenth". This beautiful melancholy continues with the two poignant tracks "It's for you" and "Estupenda Graça" until the end of this unique album.

Not much needs to be said about Bauhaus' debut album "In the flat Field", except that it is a masterpiece of goth rock. Particularly noteworthy: "Nerves", Double Dare", "Spy in the Cab" and the incomparable "Stigmata Martyr".
The Godfathers of Goth have well deserved this title!
